Hello Fred,
My late father Fred was the Battery Sergeant at Fort
Scratchley & we lived at Stockton during and after WW2.
I have never heard of such a tunnel. About the only tunnels beneath the
early harbour were coal mining ones as detailed in "Beneath Tidal Water- The
story of Newcastle's Harbour Collieries" by Ed Tonks.
Any tunnels would have been destoyed during the last Harbour Deepening
programme in the early 1980s when blasting was used to break up the rock
bottom, which was deepened from 11 to 15.2 Metres (36-50 feet).
Regards, Ian Wright
