Hi all
Some more info on Lucy Elliott -
I am currently reading Penrith Municipal council minutes from 1871. It
really is very interesting reading. There are a lot of references to names
and places which certainly help with research on this area. My plan is to
start a comprehensive index of the minutes. So that's in the pipeline.
This is for Ken:
26 June 1872
Tender from James Landers junior for forming and table draining Doonmore
street at 6/6 per rod was accepted.
That the present council chambers be taken for 12 months from 5 July at the
same rate
Council paid 6 monthly rent to Mrs Elliott of 15 pounds - until 1876 -
that's as far as I have gone!
21 December 1876
Council decided that Mrs. Elliott be served with the requisite notice to
enable council to meet the wishes of ratepayers as to reducing rent of
council chambers next year
------------
Council is now making further investigations into the building on the corner
of Doonmore and High to assessment whether there is evidence of an 1870s
building.
Hope this all helps

Hi Ken
The information you have sent to me is great. It ties in beautifully with
what I now have on Lucy and her rental of premises for the council chambers.
You may be interested to know that the great people indexing the Penrith
valuation books are up to the 1890s.
I have searched for Lucy Elliott, finding her owning 3 properties - a house
in High Street occupied by her), another next door, occupied by Ann Feeney,
and another in Henry Street occupied by Mary Cashen. I believe the one she
is living in is also the old hotel (verified by a 1860s map we have) and
that the council held their first meetings there. She possibly lived
upstairs.
Council minutes 11 Jan 1872 state they paid Mrs Elliott 15 pounds rent for 6
months for Council Chambers. I will inform you further as I read on. I am
finding the council minutes a most interesting local history document.

Lorraine,
I realized after sending you the Lucy Ann Landers narrative that I had a bit
of updating information that I hadn't incorporated. I have now done that
and attach a new version.
As you can see, the information about Robert Elliott's death and the few
years following it are still pretty vague but hopefully you have more to
add. If you can correct or add to what I have said, I would appreciate
knowing about it at your convenience.
If you want a better version of the photo, please let me know.
For Sue. Thanks for your message. Sorry I didn't include you in my first
message back to Lorraine.
Ken

Hi all
Anyone out there know anything about LUCY ELLIOTT who lived in Penrith in
the 1870s. She rented a property to Penrith Council for their first council
chambers. This property is possibly the building on the NW corner of
Doonmore and High Streets.
