Extract from Western Post and Mudgee Newspaper, 20 September, 1862
Census No. 3 - Rylstone

The police district of Rylstone contains a population of 848 males and 623 females, of which the village of Rylstone contains 69 males, 66 females, none of whom were above sixty years of age; parts of the counties of Phillip, 324 males, 242 females; Roxburgh, 430 males, 306 females; Hunter, 25 males, 9 females. Of this number of the males there were 218 married, 16 widowed, 613 not married, and 1 unspecified; of the females, 211 were married, 13 widowed, and 399 not married. There were 225 houses of which number there were only 12 built of brick or stone, the remainder were of weatherboard, slab, bark, &c. The number of rooms were 873, and 1 tent. The following were the occupations of the people:- Civil officers and police, 5; medical, 1; clerical, 1; teachers, 10; scholars under tuition at home, 39; - at school, 100; trade and commerce, 16; workers in metal, 13; in wood, 23; stone and earth, 10; leather and skins, 16; other materials, 2; mining, 1; agricultural employer!

With regard to the birthplaces of the population, there were born in New South Wales, 843; Tasmania, 3; Victoria, 1; New Zealand, 1; British America, 3; England, 352; Ireland, 247; Scotland, 118; India, 1; other British possessions, 10; United States of America, 1; China, 24; Germany, 47; France, 1; other countries, 6; The religious classification is as follows: Church of England, 729; Presbyterians, 161; Congretationalists, none; Wesleyans and Primitive Methodists, 124; other Protestants, 15; Roman Catholics, 401; Hebrews, 3; Mahomedans and Pagans, 30; others not specified, 8.


The following shows the state of education in the district:- Under five years, 273; five and under 10 years, 121 cannot read, 57 can read only, 32 can read and write; 10 and under 15 years, 35 cannot read, 43 can read only, 97 can read and write; 15 and under 20 years, 18 cannot read, 30 can read only, 93 can read and write; 20 and under 25 years, 16 cannot read, 14 can read only, 88 can read and write; 25 and under 30 years, 19 cannot read, 10 can read only, 87 can read and write; 30 and under 40 years, 80 cannot read, 22 can read only, 106 can read and write; 40 and under 50 years, 33 cannot read, 24 can read only, 82 can read and write; 50 years and upwards, 38 cannot read, 22 can read only, 80 can read and write.
