Subject: [RIVERINA] MILDRED MARY QUILTER/CROWE/LUFF

Hi everyone,

I am looking for any information (especially any other descendants!)
of Mildred Mary LUFF (nee CROWE), who was actually born
Mildred Mary QUILTER to Theresa QUILTER in 1869 in Gobarralong, near
Gundagai. Her birth certificate (BDM record 11583/1869)
has no father's details, in fact, it states 'illegitimate'. The
witness on her birth certificate is 'Mrs Luff' (who I believe was
living on the adjoining
property) - Mildred was to later marry James Joseph LUFF.

Theresa Mary QUILTER was the daughter of John J QUILTER and Frances M
BYRNE. She married her first cousin, William Joseph CROWE
(parents James Crowe and Susannah Byrne) in 1872 (BDM record
2317/1872) in Gundagai.

Mildred took on William CROWE's name, as her marriage certificate
(BDM record/s 3263/1886 and 5263/1886 - recorded twice, one
apparently contained an error) states that permission was given by
William Joseph Crowe for Mildred Mary CROWE to marry James LUFF
as she was under the age of 21 years. This marriage also took place
in Gundagai.

Genealogy pages/family trees do not mention Mildred. I heard that
there was some sort of family rift (the LUFFs), and one side of the
family
was estranged from the other, but these things were not openly spoken
of. There have been whispers among family members that she was
part Aboriginal, also because she was Irish Catholic and illegitimate
as well! For the English LUFF's this couldn't have gone down well!!

I am DESPERATE to find out anything I can on Mildred, is there anyone
out there that can help, especially from the
Gobarralong / Coolac / Gundagai / Tumut areas??
