17 - 19 November 2000
One of the premier events in History Week 2000 will be Connecting Cultures:
The Illawarra History Fair, 17 - 19 November 2000. The History Fair is being
hosted by the History Council of NSW, with support from the NSW Ministry for
the Arts, in conjunction with the history and heritage organisations of the
Illawarra region.
Connecting Cultures: The Illawarra History Fair, will be launched by the
Premier, Minister for the Arts and Minister for Citizenship, Bob Carr, MP at
Premiers History Awards presentation ceremony, on Friday November 17 at the
Wollongong City Gallery.
Connecting Cultures will explore the diversity of the Illawarras past. The
landscape and environment have sustained many cultures and peoples, linking
Indigenous communities with subsequent generations of migrants who made their
lives in the region. The landscape and environment have set the scene for the
development of a diversity industries and cultures - from agriculture,
dairying, mining and tourism. From beach culture to labour history Connecting
Cultures will explore the many peoples and pursuits that have made Illawarras community.
Expressions of interest are being sought from organisations based within the
region that would like to take this opportunity to showcase the history,
heritage and culture of the region by hosting an event. The draft program
currently includes an historical film festival, talks by local historians as
well as some of those authors short listed for the Premiers History Awards,
exhibitions and heritage walks and history trails.
Organisations from outside the Illawarra region are also invited to join the
program. The History Fair will provide opportunities to promote, exchange and
develop networks between regional and metropolitan history and heritage
organisations. You may like to host a stall or forum, develop a new
partnership with a local organisation or hold an information or development
session, just to name a few possibilities.
