Hi Chris,
I am of the belief that the South Coast was renown for coastal boating
activites such as fishing, whaling and the sagas of Ben Boyd, who made, as I
understand it, many, many trips up and down the coast of NSW - but was
primarily based in Eden.
Tilba just north of Cobargo is renown for farming and cheese making and some
gold mining.
The area was settled in the late 1820s when a number of graziers moved stock
into the district. By the 1830s the Imlay brothers had substantial holdings.
It wasn't until the improvement of the coast road in the 1880s, and the
construction of a bridge over the Narira Creek in 1882, that the town really
came into existence.
Maybe your family hopped a Ben Boyd boat and sailed to Cobargo for a few
months holiday, to seek work, to stay with friends / relations ... anything
is possible. Maybe you will be forever wondering. I am researching a family
who moved to Portland Victoria from England, then Branxholme, Victoria and
then the son moved to Picton, NSW - I am asking my self why and I suspect it
must have something to do with his job or family.

found that a child was born in 1882 at Cobargo. Why? Can anyone enlighten
me as to what may have triggered the move? I know of alluvial gold finds in
the area but nothing specific for Cobargo. All the more puzzling as the
father was a fisherman so what line of work would he have undertaken? The
move was only brief 3-6 months I think. I know the mother had an aunt in
the Broulee/Bega area at this time.
