My thanks to Brett for starting the ball rolling by explaining some of the
terms used in O'Connell's ad. You correctly gauged my understanding as being
at the "rabbit trap" level.
Thanks to Pat for telling us that O'Connell was an ancestor who had the
Beehive Store - what luck to find THE person to know all about the
situation. With his paddle steamer and camel train he would have had the
market sewn up. Hopefully he was too far upstream to be in competition with
my GGGrandfather Daniel Byrnes who ran a carting business out of Wentworth
at the time. Do you have any stories to tell us about life back then? Even
the smallest thing would be appreciated by people like me who feel so
ignorant on the topic.
Was it your John O'CONNELL or a relative who was elected as Alderman for
Wilcannia in February of 1900? The same name comes up with the tender being
accepted for the Supply of Forage for Police, Stationed at Wilcannia,
South-western District; From 7 May 1900, to 31 March 1901. Per Bushel:
Tartian Oats 4s.0d., New Zealand Oats 5s.0d., Bran 1s.8d.; Per Ton: Chaff
£7. Gazetted 5 May 1900. [p.3570, NSW Goverment Gazette]
[My Google search for Tartian + Oats returned the question - Was I after
Tartan and Oats? Perhaps I should have proceeded further along that line.]
And finally a thank you to Jeannette, a true expert in all things to do with
the area. My husband, a geologist, agrees with you that the Turkey Stone was
oiled and used for sharpening tools etc. He wanted to find out about what
type of stone it was that made it so good that it was imported from Turkey
(there are several possibilities). These days an artificial product is used.
I loved that 2 months shopping list for the Croziers; it conjures up a
picture of their lifestyle. I'll never complain about having to just go to
the supermarket again.
I might mention that there was one ad for men that I didn't include because
it would have had the whole email rejected by spam detectors. J.A.REEVES,
Esq., of 43 Chatham-street, New York, USA, offered for free to solve the
results of youthful imprudence causing early decay, nervous debility, and
the usual topic of today's emails.
Regards .........Rusheen.
