Subject: [NSW-W] Census Enumerators for 1871.
Date: Mon, 28 Aug 2006 07:06:54 +1000

I presume that these Enumerators were the officials that gave the population
figures for their districts. I wonder how they collected the data. The city
areas would have had too many people, and the country areas too large an
area, for the job to be done by one man. Certainly you would not have
expected the Registrar General to be door knocking. Country Enumerators were
very often Police Magistrates (P.M.) or Crown Prosecuting Solicitors

Regards .............Rusheen.

Gentlemen appointed to be Enumerators under the provisions of the NSW Census
Act for 1871. Full list given.
