Hi Lesley and fellow listers,
My g.g.g.grandmother, Lydia MATTHEWS, b. abt 1811 in Madron, Cornwell, England.
Lydia was tried and sentenced at County Devon, City of Exter Quarter Sessions on the 21st March, 1828 (Reel 398) and 14/10/1828 (Reel 2427) Lydia was transported from Downs, U.K. to Australia in 14th March, 1829 on board the "Sovereign" on her second voyage to New South Wales.Lydia was sentenced to 7 years transportation for stealing a shirt worth 3 shillings from Mr John Templeman. Lydia shared to voyage with 119 other female convicts, all of which arrived safely in the colony on the 3rd August, 1829. The master of the ship was William McKellar and the surgeon was George Fairfowl.
She was originally "disposed to William Lee of Bathurst", one of the first settlers in the Bathurst area.
In 1830, Lydia was still in the Bathurst area when she made application for marriage to James SHERRARD who had arrived in the Colony as a "free" person on the "Morley (2)". Lydia was 19 years old at this time. There is no records of the marriage ever taking place.
By 1832, Lydia was residing in the Maitland area when she again made application for marriage - this time to John SHAW, a former convict who arrived in the Colony in 1820.
Lydia received her "Certificate of Freedom" on 30th September, 1836 by which time she was married to John SHAW and living in the Maitland area.
By 1841, Lydia was widowed as John SHAW had died in Newcastle Hospital.
In 1844 an application was made for marriage between Lydia and Robert WEBB, a "lifer", who had arrived on the "Adrian". Robert was on a Ticket of Leave. They were married in Muswellbrook on the 28th October, 1844.
It is here that I have run into a "brick wall". I have not been able to trace what has happened to Lydia, Robert or Lydia's 3 younger children from her marriage to John SHAW.
If there is anyone who can enlighten me to this mystery I will be forever in your debit.
Regards,
Glynis
