Hi Maureen

I am pretty sure that they did not marry although I cannot confirm that. When
Mary died in 1827 she went under the name of Cross but many females did take on
their common law husbands surnames.

Hi List,

Have not yet got the hang of the Convicts Permission to Marry list. There are a
few of mine that I know about. Are we doing year by year again...please excuse
if I have not understood.

I would like to find out if one of mine... Mary Ann Davison aka Davidson aka
Davis, ever married John Cross. He came with the First Fleet aboard the
Alexander and she came aboard the Lady Julian. I have not been able to find a
marriage, though that is hardly conclusive given my level of
experience/competence!

I wondered if John was married before he came as there are murmurs about
previous children. I have been looking for Mary in Kirkaldy in Scotland and have
found one in Kirkoswald... am wondering if this could be the same thing. Any
info would be greatly appreciated.

I find the whole convict marriage business fascinating. At least they appeared
to keep it on record. Meanwhile I have lots of 'respectable' Port Phillip
pioneers who prided themselves on being free settlers but appear to have jumped
over a broomstick for all the records I can find on them!

Regards
