Hello Lesley and all,
To give the great race a convict slant...
According to the Bathurst City Council website:
http://bathurst.local-e.nsw.gov.au/about/17/
Two Melbourne Cup winners were bred and trained in the Bathurst district.
They were The Barb, the winner in 1866, and Merriwee, who won in 1899.
Both horses were owned by George Lee of Leeholm, OConnell. The Barb was
trained in Kelso by Mr. Ingersole.
Mr. Ingersole was Peter's GG Grandfather, John Ingersole (Lord Melville II -
1829).
Kind regards,
Lisa & Peter
