Subject: Two More Convicts to Claim!!! James Phillips and Bridget Sweeney/McSweeney
Date: Wed, 6 Oct 2004 22:28:20 +1000

Hi Lesley and Listers

At last another brick wall has fallen tonight!!! I have discovered two more convicts down my fathers line - a line that has been frustrating me for some time.

James Phillips (Minstrel (2) - 1825) married Bridget Sweeney/McSweeney (Diamond - 1832) in 1842 at Queanbeyan, NSW after receiving permission to marry. The NSW BD&M list Bridget's maiden name as McSweeney.

James was sentenced in Hereford in 1824 and was sentenced to 7 years - he was 21 years old (therefore born approx 1803)

Bridget was sentenced at Limerick City in 1837, also to 7 years at the age of 26 (therefore born approx 1811).

James died in 1850, and Bridget Phillips remarries to William Burt in 1854 (hence my earlier email tonight)

In 1863, (from her marriage certificate) Bridget Burt consents to her daughter, my ggg grandmother, Elizabeth Phillips marrying Peter Weber, a German immigrant who arrived on the immigrant ship "Calcutta" in Melbourne in 1853.

Peter and Elizabeth Weber's oldest child, Caroline Amelia Weber, marries my gg grandfather, Walter Cordner Downie, in 1888 - the rest is history.

To make this an extra special event, a fellow Weber researcher who I made contact with recently sent me 5 photos only yesterday of Peter and Elizabeth Weber, and Caroline and her siblings - a very rare find.

Naturally would love to hear from anyone researching James Phillips and Bridget Sweeney/McSweeney!!!!! What a great way to end a day!!!

Cheers!!!!
Ross from belrose, Sydney
