When I was a wee little lass (back in the early 50's) my schooling, because
of our remoteness was via Correspondence School, which was then called
Blackfriars Correspondence School. Was it because of the area of its
location? I think so. It is included in the NSW Department of School
Education history at
http://www.ssdec.nsw.edu.au/school_hist/hist24.html

According to http://www.dubbo-d.schools.nsw.edu.au/html/history.html there
was also a Teachers' College at Blackfriars - to where the Correspondence
School moved into after the closure of the Teachers' College.

Google search extracts includes mention of:
"Blackfriars Campus, University of Technology, Sydney"
and
"In 1906 several teachers colleges were amalgamated to form Sydney Teachers
College at Blackfriars, in close proximity to the University of Sydney"
and
"Blackfriars Street, Chippendale" and

Blackfriars was also a Polling Place at the recent House of
Represenentatives election, where Labours Tanya PLIBERSEK was elected

So using all this information: the Chippendale area bordered by Abercrombie,
Cleveland Streets and Broadway would most likely be the area once known as
"Blackfriars, Sydney in the Colony of New South Wales"

And thank you for mentioning the name Blackfriars. I am about to start a
little course tomorrow "Writing the Story of Your Life", and all the above
searching has provided me with some fond memories, and some relative
research!
Cheers
