Well I stand corrected. I did only say that I suspected it was a new
name.
It certainly was not in common use in the area when I worked there
for several years around 1980. In fact I never encountered the name
Strawberry Hills myself until 1991, at which point I did not know
where
it was and had to go and find out. At first I thought it was near
Orchard
Hills.

I have some old brochures for the Nimrod Theatre in Belvoir Street
Surry Hills from about 1980. The same building is now the Belvoir
Street Theatre
in Strawberry Hills.

Now neither the 1993 Gregory's, the 1999 Roadmaster nor the 2001 UBD
street directories show a postcode district 2012, and only the 2001
UBD
has a label for "Strawberry Hills" which is in a smaller italic type
right
under the larger label Surry Hills. and within the Surry Hills
postcode
boundary towards the south-west corner.
Now I know there are special postcodes for particular buildings
and post office boxes and the like but none of these three directories
I have
show a zone of street addresses for it. The 2010 is the postcode for
the
whole of Surry Hills including the area called Strawberry Hills and
which
runs all the way up to Oxford Street.

Obviously the name is originally very old. It is certainly more
commonly
used now than it was 20 years ago. The Geographical Names Board
defines
it as an "urban locality within the suburb of Surry Hills", name
assigned 1996
The GNB also lists "Strawberry Hills Post Office", name assigned in
1981
to a post office on the corner of Cleveland and Elizabeth Street,
Surry Hills.
