Thank you Lesley. From the information you sent now realize George STARBUCK
was a neighbor of Jno. MACKIE whom I have at 82 George Street. MACKIE is
the man that my Joseph was assigned to on arrival in the colony.

Statement to the Water Police on arrival in San Francisco ... July 1851

STARBUCK, George
Mate of bark JOHN POTTER. Joined ship at Sydney 23 of December 1850. Am an
American, a native of Nantucket. Have lived in Sydney for the last 20 years
- have been an overseer in an Oil establishment. My last employer was Chas.
Chapman - I have an idea of the character of the passengers - and cannot say
anything bad of anyone - have been acquainted with many of them for years --

CLEGG, Joseph and Mrs. Mary
..... Knew Mr. Starbuck in Sydney 15 years. ---

We now have Joseph CLEGG returning to Sydney

Index to Unassisted Arrivals to New South Wales, 1842-1855
Joseph CLEGG arrived on the COLUMBUS 27 December 1851 from San Francisco from
Sydney Morning Herald 29 December 1851

Don't know why he returned alone had been working along the lines of the
political climate in San Francisco was a bit anti-Australian. There had been
several fires and blame was placed on SYDNEY DUCKS. Joseph/family had the mi
sfortune to arrive during the height of activity of the 1851 Committee of
Vigilance (reason I found their interview) but there is a new wrinkle ...
Hargraves discovered gold in the Blue Mountains while my Joseph/Mary were enroute to
San Francisco.

Hargraves wife was Eliza or Elizabeth Mackie, the daughter of John. If this
is the same John as the Jno. Mackie (Mackay, etc.) that my Joseph was
assigned to, he might have returned to Australia in search of gold?

Huge thanks to you Lesley,

Janet in California
