Hi Lesley and Listers

John's story is really interesting - he was obviously a well educated
man - when you compare his letter with those of early military men like
Lt Ralph Clark for example, Slater's is more poetic.

He was presumably a silk weaver or similar, do you know what his crime
was?

Christine

Yes, it's for real Russell. ... and Catherine did arrive in 1822 on the
Providence. Checking the NSW 1828 Census I note that she was living in
George
Street and working as a Shopkeeper, with 3 children who arrived on the
Providence and another who was born in the colony. There is more about
John
available in the Col. Sec. Index.

It was published by his wife Catharine - who stated

To the Public

Many applications having been made for the perusal of the letter of my
Husband,
John Slater, from New South Wales, containing an account of the manners,
customs, and present state of that colony, and having found it
impossible to
accommodate as many as I could wish, I have thought proper to have the
letter
printed by which every person may be accommodated at a small expense,
and will
at the same time, it is hoped, in some measure, assist me in fulfilling
my
husband's wishes, by enabling me, if I can obtain permission from his
Majesty's
Government, to go to him, with my four children, to settle in that
country.

Catharine Slater
Millstone Lane
Dec. 5th, 1818
