Hi Rhonda:

My convict Richard WILCOCKS (b. 1762) was also on the Charlotte.
However, I have a SQUIRE connection as well. Robert, Richard's brother,
married Mary Ann CONN, sister of Capt. John CONN of Dreadnought fame.
His son William WILLCOCKS married Elizabeth YOUNG, and they had several
children, of whom Henry John WILLCOCKS, my great-grandfather, married
Julia SQUIRE at Portsmouth (1852).

Julia was the only daughter of Edmund SQUIRE, a highly respected Warrant
Officer in the Royal Navy, and his wife Sarah KEMP. The KEMP family
made straw hats for the Navy. Edmund died of sunstroke at Mauritius
(probably should have been wearing one of those straw hats!) on 12 Feb
1845. Edmund's parents were Robert Joice SQUIRE and his first wife
Martha BOUND. We have some evidence that a Robert Joyce SQUIRE was
christened at Winterborne Zelston, Dorset, but my father maintained that
his SQUIRE connection was to Sir John Collings SQUIRE who was also a
Devon man along with all his ancestors (whom I have traced back five
generations.) There appears to be no connection with this family.
However, just conceivably, could James SQUIRE have had any connection to
Robert Joyce/Joice SQUIRE?
