Hi Anna

I use FTM 6 (ordered it directly from the US from their website) and am very
happy with it. It's very easy to install. You can import GEDCOM files,
import graphics eg scanned photos in JPEG format, import text from word
processing files. You can create a variety of reports eg one showing causes
of death - great way of detecting a pattern of illness. You can create books
suitable for publishing, scrapbooks of photos for each individual,
relationship reports - all manner of reports. You can also print a variety
of family trees, including an hourglass or all-in-one tree that shows both
ancestors and descendants of an individual all in the one tree. Fantastic!
You can create GEDCOM files from your database and privatise selected
individuals, especially good if you don't want to share details of living
persons. It has a great system for recording all your source information. Of
course some of the packages come with quite a number of CDs and FTM has its
own web site where they advertise more and more CDs. A large number of them
contain US details which is absolutely useless for me, so of course, I don't
use them, but the software is great. You can even create error reports to
identify discrepancies in your data. It even has a "to do" feature.

Of course, FTM is not perfect and I believe sources may not import/export
with GEDCOM files, but it suits me just fine. There was an exercise recently
where some genealogists looked at the performance of a number of genealogy
software programs. You can check it out at:
http://www.gentech.org/gedtest.htm

Anyway, good luck with whatever you choose. It's a difficult decision. I
think most packages are comprehensive, so whatever you choose, it'll
probably do the job just fine.

Cheers
