David,

I too had problems with a german surname - mine was Diezel. Whilst
there are quite a few of this name on the IGI for Germany I'm still
having trouble locating my particular family. My main problem was
locating the family records in Australia, below are a few of the
different spellings I found the records under.

Diezel - ggranfathers marriage certficate
Dizel - ggrandmothers death certificate
Dietzel - the birth of aboves son
Diedsell - the birth of aboves daughter (my grandmother, took 8 years to
find)
Ditzel - marriage of great uncle and birth of his 2 daughters
Dipzell - newspaper report of great uncle's death (died in railway
accident)

What I'm trying to get at here is that the spelling of any name can
change depending on how well educated the person was taking down the
information and also on how well they listened at the time. Unless
someone else can give you a different spelling for your surname I would
suggest you try saying the above name out loud with a german accent and
see if you can detect a difference.

Cheers,
Kate
