Well, I had some good news. The Australian birth records DID give a
place of birth of the brother of my ancestor (his name being Andrew
GRAHAM.) The date is 1842.
Apparently, he was one of the children born in England, not Ireland! One
birth record (the earlier one) says Stroud (which is not far from
Cheltenham, which his mother gave as her birthplace) and the other said
"Stowe". I wonder if "Stowe" was a misheard "Stroud".
So I'll order Stroud parish records. Oddly enough, there is no Andrew
GRAHAM or male GRAHAM in the BMD indexes for 1841-1843. Not sure why not
and hope that doesn't mean that he wasn't born there.
I'd have liked an Irish birthplace, but the English one helps confirm
the family stories that Mom was from Cheltenham.
Ah, my family. Always a challenge.
