District Council of Macclesfield (127)
Walter Hurtle Leslie TONKIN
Born at Monarto, South Australia in the year 1880, Mr W.H. L. Tonkin is a
well-known resident of Macclesfield, where he has resided for the past
thrity-two years, during which time he has been closely associated with many
details of Council matters. For the past three years he has ably filled the
position of Clerk of the Council, and twelve years previously he served the
district as Council Clerk for a term of four years. He is Secretary of the
local School Committee and of the Soldiers' Memorial Committee. Mr Tonkin
has also been a member of the I.O.R. Lodge for the past twenty-six years.
District Council of Bremer (133)
Arthur William PEARCE
Born at Point Sturt in 1869, is the son of the late Mr William Pearce, who
came to this State from Cornwall, England, in the early pioneering days of
the colony. Mr A.W. Pearce has for 53 years been a resident of Point Sturt.
He takes an active interest in all local district matters, and for the past
20 years has represented Alexandrina Ward as Councillor. He is a member and
President of the local Literary Society; also a member of the South
Australian Pastoralists' Association. Mr Pearce is a prominent breeder of
shorthorn cattle and of crossbred and comeback sheep.
Arthur John FOLLETT, JP
Son of the late Mr John Follett, of Mount Barker, who came to Australia from
Sussex, England, about 1830. Mr A.J. Follett was born at Mount Barker in
the year 1864, and for 37 years has been a resident of Langhorne's Creek.
In the public matters of his district Mr Follett has evinced a keen
interest, and he has filled many responsible positions. He has been
representing Langhorne's Creek for the past six years as Councillor. He is
a member of the Strathalbyn Agricultural Society, and of the local
Repatriation Committee; Chairman of the Langhorne's Creek Soldiers' Memorial
Committee. In religious matters he has also played an active part; is a
Local Preacher, and has been Superintendent of the local Methodist
Sunday-school for 33 years.
District Council of Encounter Bay (137)
Robert Thomas SWEETMAN
For 68 years has been a resident of Encounter Bay. He was born at the
Marion, near Oaklands, South Australia, in 1846. His father (the late James
Sweetman) came to Australia from Ireland about the year 1839 in the "William
Nicholl." Mr Sweetman has represented Victor Harbour and Inman Valley Ward
as Councillor for about 20 years. He is a member of the local Board of
Health and of the Liberal Union. He is also a member of the Yilki
Congregational Church, and is Superintendent of the Sunday School.
Joseph MILLARD
Born at Inman Valley in 1860, and is the son of the late G. Millard, of
Inman Valley, who came to Australia from England in the very early
pioneering days. He has been a resident of Inman Valley for 62 years. Mr
Millard has represented Inman Ward for a period of seven years; previous to
this he represented Inman Valley Ward in the Yankalilla District Council for
four years. He is a member of the Upper Inman Valley School Committee and a
Trustee of the Inman Valley Methodist Church; he has also been a member of
the Liberal Union for several years, and of the Victor Harbour branch of the
M.U., I.O.O.F. Lodge.
