Just write your book and send it in, Greg.
The first step at that point is to print out the manuscript
and send it in along with a digital copy on a floppy. Any
of the common word processor packages will do the job,
or if you are fussy send it in as an .RTF file.
One thing that occurred to me since the other day is that
my book (a historical work) was accepted by a publisher
whereas a cousin of mine who had compiled a book on
that branch of our family had it printed up herself.
She had written it up using Claris Works, and the printer
had to import the text and layout into Pagemaker on a
Mac. But what she had done was format the whole lot
and placed all her photos, tables, etc by hand first.
So there was a LOT of extra work to preserve that format
for the print run. It was a case of a little old lady and a
little old country printer with a print run of no more than
100 copies to be given out to family.
If that is all the job entails, you might as well do it yourself
at home using Microsoft Publisher and a laser printer. The
job then is to collate the pages and staple them together.
or have them spiral bound in which case Word will do fine.
Alternatively, if you cannot find a publisher to accept your
MS, have a look at their range of books, examine the quality
and layout, then contact their printer direct and ask them if
they will do the job and at what price. Then if they accept it
simply follow their instructions.
Hhmmm, another thought, if you don't have readers lined up
to buy them you will end up with boxes of books under your
bed . . .
