Good Morning List
Now this could get interesting and confuseing
There a 2 Debbie's from Adelaide lol
This topic has been interesting reading indeed , as now I am starting to fill in a few gaps for me as to why my Nans eldest sister Hilda did not appear in the BDM like the rest of the children ,
I have been wondering if maybe it was also the fact that the Father was a seaman , he was spotted in W.A , a month before his 2nd child was born in Adelaide , and then Hildas daughter said there was talk they lived in Townsville for awhile , If I can find Hildas birth then I have a better idea where my ggrandparents married , I though in England but no record there either ,
So now wondering if Hilda was regestered at all as father moved around
Julie this bit interests me
People went to the local registrar to notify of
births, deaths and marriages, they certainly didn't travel (in a lot of
cases) hundreds of miles to register these events.
Excuse my ignorance , as I have only been learning and searching this year for my family tree , where would one start looking , as I thought the area of Parkside was close enough to register in Adelaide BDM
Thanks

Hi all
I have had first hand of not being able to find two births in South Oz. One
my great grandmother Clara Welke but I can not find her in the Lutheran
Archives either. The other birth was back in 1860 and to this day I can not
find that. I have heard that sometimes Registrars never bothered to send the
certificates back to Adelaide or they were lost in fires.
I have a book about the SA Registration Districts of Births, Marriages and
Deaths by Beryl Schahinger and I will quote (pge32)
"No record of a Certificate in the Adelaide Office-
One District Registrar sent duplicates to Adelaide with a courier, on the
fastest horse of the district. Whilst stopped at a tavern for a drink the
horse was stolen and the bags of mail thrown away - are they the
certificates for which you get "No Record" when applying for a copy in
Adelaide?
Letters from the District Registrar to the General-Registrar explain that
both copies of some birth certificates were bound in the District Book. The
Adelaide Office requested the District Registrar "to take out our copies,
without damaging the certificates and send them to us now". This has caused
pages to be recorded as missing from the District Register as numbers are
consecutive".
Beryl also goes on to say that Scots and Catholics births were not
registered until 1875 as they considered baptism as a satisfactory record so
if your ancestors were Scots or Catholics the only proof someone was born is
through their church records.
But it still doesn't help me!!!!!!!
Cheers Debbie from Adelaide
