Hi Corrine,
That sounds plausible. Many names began with a profession name. Maybe,
because of the wide spread use of Cock, it originated from fishermen, who
used small sail boats?

I also have COCK and WOOLCOCK ancestry (both from Cornwall).
Jim Thompson (no relationship) who has done a lot of work on Cornish
Surnames says:
COCK, COCKS
poss: cok, a type of sailboat, or cok, empty or vain. It is possible that
COX is included in the group in Cornwall, it is also plausible that COCKS is
really COX.
