Hi Brett
Don't know if I can help you but also researching a
Smith ancestor who arrived in Vic. around 1850/2. He
went to Melbourne and then to the goldfields, finally
settling in Warrnambool area. There could be a
connection because I know there were other Smiths who
also settled in Warrnambool. One assumes they would
be related. Difficult to get accurate details from
here in NSW but have done some searches in Melbourne
library. Plan on visiting Warrnambool and Portland,
Vic next month with view to more research. Will keep
an eye out for Robert and Adam for you.
My Smith seems to have hailed from Hereford, England,
going to Tasmania for about 12 years (not a convict as
far as I can tell but may have been connected to Thos.
Smith convict). He then left Tas., at the same time
as a son of Thos and they both came to Portland
sometime around 1848-52(then part of NSW). James (my
Smith) married in Portland in December 1852 (by then,
Vic). Both James and Thomas' son settled in
Wangoom, Warrnambool, Vic. (got his name somewhere in
a BIG file, uncommon 'Old Testament' sort of name)
I notice there are many Smith migrants who came from
Scotland. Mine claimed to be from Manchester,
England but his death cert. states Hereford, England!
If I unravel anything that might be of help to you in
Warrnambool, I will email you.
kind regards
Jill Wilson.(NSW)
