Hello All
Can someone help?
I have been subscribed to this List for some time and watch with interest
for information on resources that may assist me to obtain more information
on two ancestors who I know were convicts to Tasmania. I have substantial
information regarding their subsequent family history but scant information
of official Convict Records. Despite considerable searching of Internet
resources their names do not appear on surname lists etc of Convict Records.
(1) James SHETTLE (Shuttle) - Born 1807 Ramsbury, Wiltshire, England. -
Convicted Berkshire Assizes 16 July 1932. Transported to Tasmania arriving
on 16 July 1833 on vessel Georgina II. Was Assigned to William Harris as
a farm labourer at Ralph's Bay. He married Mary Anne Meredith in 1838
(see below). Later settled in the Clarence Plains area, now Rokeby before
moving to Victoria.
(2) Elisabeth MEREDITH (Married name). May be identical with an Elisabeth
Meredith who was convicted at the Warwick Summer Assizes for uttering
forged one pound notes and subjected to transportation. Possibly
transported on the vessel "Morley" which arrived in Hobart on
22.05.1820. It is also possible that a son of her first marriage called
Reuben LUCKMAN and her daughter Mary Ann MEREDITH travelled with her to
Australia on the Morley. I suspect that Mary Anne Meredith was born on the
Prison Hulk at Chatham, Kent while Elisabeth was awaiting
transportation. Elisabeth Meredith was assigned to William Harris at
Ralph's Bay. In 1838 married William Harris who had been a convict on
Norfolk Island and obtained land in Van Dieman's Land circa 1910.
I don't want to push my luck but most of this information has come to me
second hand. I do however have confirmation of marriages, deaths etc so
would just like to obtain confirmation of Convict records, particularly
those related to their conviction, transportation and early years in
Tasmania while assigned. I am not asking for lookups, but would appreciate
some kindly person outlining a logical course of researching this - web
sites - census - musters etc. which I could refer to. I someone can point
me in the right direction it would be most appreciated.
