Subject: Disposal of Female Convicts on Arrival
Date: Sat, 29 Apr 2006 19:16:42 +1000
Hello Everyone
I have put some information on the Female Factory Research Group's website
which outlines how female convicts were disposed of on arrival in VDL. It
appears that from the time of the arrival of the 'Harmony' in 1829 up until
the arrival of the 'Gilbert Henderson' in 1840, all female convicts (except
those who were ill who were sent directly to the Hospital) were sent
directly to Cascades Female Factory. This changed with the arrival of the
'Gilbert Henderson', the new procedures lasting at least until the arrival
of the 'Garland Grove' (2). Of course, the process changed again when the
probation system was introduced and female convicts were removed directly to
the 'Anson'.
See http://www.femalefactory.com.au/FFRG/convicts.htm#Arrival for the
information I have uploaded.
I have also made some other updates to the website - these are listed on the
home page under What's New and Interesting Snippets.
Regards
Trudy
