Hi
(Sorry this is a bit long but i felt it was important - I
hope you can take the time to read it.)
On Monday evening I learnt a valuable lesson when I
discovered that it is important to check the original
information for entries in the Tasmanian Pioneers Index. I
had decide to photocopy the birth entry of my
great-grand-mother Isabella HALL of New Norfolk off the
microfilm just because I wanted a complete record rather
than because I thought there would be any further
information on it than what was on the index. Well, I was in
for a surprise.
I had been stuck on her mother Susannah JOHNSON (or
Johnstone) for many years as I could find nothing about her.
She had not been born in Tasmania and I could not find her
death either. There on the birth registration for her
daughter was the lead I had been looking for for years. The
informant was not the parents but the grand-father James
Johnson. Well he had obviously also come to Tasmania. One
lead led to another. I found James Johnson's death entry and
looked up the film. The infomant was a son-in-law John
O'KEEFE - not Susannah's husband so I now had another lead.

Well to cut a long story short, one bit of information led
me to find a sister and father and more importantly to
discover that Susannah married her sister's husband after
their respective spouses had died. A search under the
O'Keefe name has turned up her death at long last. Now I am
hoping that my luck will hold and the death certificate (it
was after 1900) will have information on her birth place.

So now my JOHNSON family looks like this - Father James
JOHNSON (no wife found as yet), died 1881, New Norfolk
Daughter 1. Mary Ann, born circa 1838, married John O'KEEFE
before arrival in Tasmania, no children known at this stage.
Mary Ann died 1881, New Norfolk, John died 1903.
Daughter 2. Susannah, born circa 1844 married John HALL at
Maquarie Plains in 1859, John died 1894, Susannah married
John O'KEEFE (her brother-in-law) in 1894, Susannah died
1911.

I would love to hear from anyone who thinks there might be a
connection
