Muzz,
Magnet would most likely refer to the old Magnet silver mine, which was
located just NW from Waratah and Mt Bischoff, over the other side of the
Arthur River. It appeared to be active until about 1910.
Geoffrey Blainey refers to it a number of times in his 'The Peaks of
Lyell' (1954). On p. 292 he writes:
" In seventy years (the mining fields) have seen populous towns rise
with all the airs and signs of permanence and then collapse so
completely that only the tombstones remain. Kelly Basin, .... Magnet
..... have been wiped from the map."
In "the Geology and Mineral Deposits of Tasmania (1938) by P. Nye and F
Blake (my grandfather!) the Magnet mine is described as being near
Waratah and as having yielded 35,000 tons of lead and 7 million ozs of
silver.
If following this up becomes important get back to me - I may be able to
put you in touch with some better informed historians in the mining
industry there.
