Hi Robyn,
There was a prominent citizen in the Torquay area in the 1850s-60s named James Cartledge. He owned a schooner ("Cousins") and was a school master for a short time. Two of his sons were killed at sea when their boat, the "Tamar Maid", capsized on the Rip, on its way to Geelong. Could easily be your James.
