Jackie,

I am a Hambly (variation Hambley) / Springham descendant through Jane's
younger sister Mary who married Charles Richardson.

Information on Kylie Veale's website advised Thomas Horton was sentenced
to 7 years for pickpocketing, arriving (port not advised) 26 Aug 1821 per
"Lady Ridley". Stated his parents lived in Manchester Street, Liverpool
and his father was a smith. He was 19, 5'6", grey eyes and brown hair.
Kylie also had a sister Martha who married Thomas Raines. They were the
main focus of the website. The age is consistent which what was noted on
his marriage certificate - aged 28 in 1830.

However, (isn't there always?) when I asked Kylie how she found Hammond
Horton and Elizabeth Turley as his parents, she wasn't able to confirm the
source. I haven't found anything for him but haven't really looked as
he's not one of my "directs".

Charles Green, caretaker of the Norfolk Island website is a Duncombe /
Hambly descendant and may have found something which may be useful.

A book titled the Convict and The Carpenter was written some 10 years ago
outlining the lives of William Hambly - ship's carpenter/mate on the
supply ship "Sirius" and his wife Mary Springham, convict who was
transported aboard the "Lady Penrhyn". There are errors in the book but
at least it was a starting point.

They married on Norfolk Island, had 3 (maybe 4 but not confirmed) children
before she died. William and the two surviving children were moved to
Hobart. His son died relatively young and only his daughter Elizabeth
married - to John Duncombe. William's name is on a plague in Hobart,
don't recall the name of the park (not that familiar with Hobart) but I've
a photograph of it.

Hope that helps a little.

Regards
Dianne
(Still sunny and short sleeve weather in Perth)
