Alison,

I have a copy of "Browns River - a History of Kingston and Blackmans Bay"
by Julie Gardam, published by the Rotary Club of Kingston in 1988.

On page 9 mention is made of a house "Boronia", still existing, with a photo
on page 8.
On page 96 the house is said to have been built by EJ Manley, and lists a
succession of owners. It appears to be quite a substantial house, with a
ballroom added at one time.

Mention is also made of a parcel of 50 acres leased to C. Briggs by EJ
Manley. Manley and his son owed a total of 1000 acres, which would have
included most of Boronia Hill, immediately south of Kingston, and a large
part of present day Blackmans Bay. They sold out in 1849.

Further on Manley was leasing 50 acres to C. Briggs in 1858 for 40 pounds,
and Briggs was leasing a further 50 acres from a neighbouring owner,
Chamberlain for 100 pounds.

What would have probably been known as Boronia is now covered with the urban
development of both Kingston and Blackmans Bay. The property would have been
later subdivided, firstly into small landholdings of maybe 30 or 40 acres,
and later into house lots. I used to live at Blackmans Bay and, as a land
surveyor, was part of the process of
subdividing the residual of some of those small holdings.

The name Boronia is also immortalised by Boronia Hill, Boronia Point, and
Boronia Beach. The house sits just above Boronia Beach, with access from
Roslyn Avenue, the main through road.

For more details on the history of the area contact the Kingborough
Municipal Council,
Council Chambers, Channel Highway, Kingston. They should be able to refer
you to someone who can tell you more.
