Dear Tim and Lists,
I realize that Tim is looking for his Irish ancestor in England, but
thought I would like to share what I found here in Australia about the
Irish Women and girls who arrived in Australia during and after the
famine.
I have just finished researching an Irish Orphan who was one of the
9,000 who arrived in Australia from Ireland.
I would suggest to anyone who is looking for that elusive ancestor to
have a look at Genseek Genealogy on the web under NSW Genealogical &
History. Then click on Emigration Schemes and you will find NSW Assisted
Immigrants 1844-59. This list is not complete but it will give you some
idea where to look. I found the one I was looking for and through the
lists was given some wonderful help re books etc.
Barefoot and Pregnant by Trevor McClughlin
Irish Women in Colonial Australia .. ..
A Decent set of girls, The Irish Famine orphans of the Thomas Arduthnot
1849-50 by Ridhard Reid & Chery Morgan
(this one is where I found the one I was looking for. it gives all the
names of those who arrived on this ship etc.)
If after you have looked at these books and became hooked as I did, read
The Long Farewell by Don Charlwood. It will really curl your hair.
Regards
Irene Schaffer
