There was a system in some convict brickworks, whereby a convict would mark
every 10th brick, in order to make it easier to count his tally. I presume
they had to achieve a quota each day. The mark I have seen most often on
convict-made bricks is a thumb-print, pressed into the wet clay - what could
be more personal than that!
