Where have you been looking for her birth - too old to have been born in
Tasmania probably. And if you're after the name COURTNEY - start in Devon!
If you'd like to know more - the COURTENAY name is the family name of the
Earls of Devon and has been since about the 14th century. I don't know how
many people have "adopted" the name, but as I have an ancestor that did, it
may be that Devonians fancied doing so......

Subject: [AUS-Tas] Ellen GARDENER
G'Day List,
I am having strife finding information on Ellen GARDENER {Abt 1812 - 1867}
William and Ellen married in Hobart on 14 December 1829 . They had 6 Boys
and 2 Girls who had the surname Courtney Pratt. My problem is I can't find
Ellen's birth under GARDENER. One of the witnesses at the wedding was James
COURTNEY and I am beginning to wonder if this man may have been her Father
and she may have married a GARDENER. This could explain why the children
were named COURTNEY-PRATT According to the TAMIOT records at Archives I
found a death certificate which I believe is Ellen GARDENER :- PRATT Eleanor
{Helena} Died 18 November 1867 aged 55 years, at her residence in Bathurst
St. Hobart, Tasmania.
Tasmanian Pioneer Index Death No. :- 7038. Spouse William . See also PRATT
Edward Courtney - Hobart, St. David's cemetry.Cause of Death :- Apoplexy
{This is usually a stroke caused by a Haemorrhage of the brain.}Age at Death
:- 55 years. Name on Death Certificate :- Helena PRATT Hoping someone has
researched this family and could help me solve this question.
Thanks from Gary
