Hello Michelle,
Ma Dwyer was the licence of the Esplanade on the Hobart Waterfront. This was a licensed premises and was not a brothel, and was never run as such by Ma. Being an Hotel it had rooms available as did many hotels is the Hobart area, and the licensees were not particular as to what they were used for.
As to Ma herself, when the Esplanade was closed down in the 1960's she did for a time work at the Derwent Bridge Hotel (the old one ran by Leon Dalco), and later she had a second hand shop in the North Hobart area, so she was alive in the 1970's.
Michelle, I can assure you that this is correct as I did know Ma, I saw her at Derwent Bridge, and as I was living in Hobart at the time, her shop was common knowledge in the north Hobart area.
Regards
Joe

I am looking for information on Ma Dwyer (Mary Ann Dwyer) who apparently ran a brothel in the Salamanca area.
She was born Mary Ann Latham on 5 Feb 1877, married William Dwyer on the 3 February 1897 and died on the 5 Feb 1953.
Where would I look to find information on her business etc?
Michelle
