I have just joined the list as I have uncovered a Tasmanian connection. As I
am new to research in Tasmania I would appreciate any help.
On the new Scottish wills site, www.scottishdocuments.com I discovered the
will of my 3xgt-grandfather William LAWSON who died in South Leith, MLN, SCT
in 1868. Lucky me, my Dad is over in Edinburgh at the minute and has been in
to the GROS to have a look at it for me. The will names a son I had not
found previously - Alexander LAWSON, resident in Van Diemen's Land. There is
a codicil to the will which alters the bequest to Alexander because of his
death in Van Diemen's Land.
I searched the Tasmanian Archives site and found a possible candidate for
the above Alexander
LAWSON :
Personal Information: LAWSON, ALEXANDER
Gender: Male
Birth: 1819 - EDINBOROUGH,SCOTLAND [@]
Marriage/Relationship:
Death: 1867 - HOBART,Tasmania, Australia [@]
The Australian Vital Records Index gives an exact date of death - 22 Aug
1867.
Can anyone tell me if I am likely to find any further useful information if
I send for the death certificate? e.g. informant, if there is no spouse or
parents; length of time in colony; place of burial; etc.?
The will also names Alexander's sister, Margaret Lawson FINLAY. Once again
the Tasmanian Archives site shows the marriage of Margaret :
Personal Information: LAWSON, MARGARET
Gender: Female
Birth: 1822 - [f]
Marriage/Relationship: 1844 - HOBART,Tasmania, Australia ( to ALEXANDER
FINLAY ) [f]
Death:
Siblings : No Siblings found in this search
Children (all born Brighton, TAS)
FINLAY ROBERT DOCTOR 1848
FINLAY MARGARET AMELIA 1851
FINLAY GEORGE LEWIS PERIMAN 1852
FINLAY WILLIAM ALEXANDER 1854
FINLAY VALENTINE 1856
FINDLAY JESSIE DODD 1860
The Archives information records that three of the above children married
but it only shows George Lewis Periman Finlay as having issue.
I would be grateful for any advice/information on any of the above, and, in
particular, on tracing the arrival of Alexander and Margaret.
