G'day, I have no known connection, but the following may help someone -
the CWGC site contains no more information. The AWM-133 Nominal roll tells
us his name was Alfred; he enlisted 04 Nov 1915, and he died of disease.
The Roll of Honour goes slightly further: he enlisted at Parkes, NSW.
BEAN tells us that 19th Bn was part of 5th Bde, in the 2nd Div. The 2nd Div
was the first Australian unit on the Western Front: 07 April 1916, near
Armentieres (BEAN, p201).

Hello All!
This may be of interest to someone in Australia,
although not necessarily to Tasmanians. I am not a
member of other Australian lists so perhaps someone
could advise me where best to send it. I visit the
village of Lydden, near Dover in Kent, England, from
time to time and yesterday came across the grave and
headstone as follows.
"Australian Imperial Force.
4773 Private A. STOKES
19th Bn. Australian Inf.
14th December 1916"
The headstone is the normal simple, but very
effective, Commonwealth War Graves Commission type,
clean and in good condition. I took a couple of
photographs of it, which are clear and could easily be
e-mailed to anyone who might wish to see them.
I also have some photographs of the church and
churchyard if interested parties would like to see the
pleasant and attractive setting. It is the only such
grave in the churchyard.
Best wishes, Jim Halsey, Hampshire, England
