Hi Phil,
I would say that it means the Road Gang working at Cleveland (north of
Campbell Town). My convict ancestor Robert BARKER was sent to Cleveland to
work on road building.
In the Van Diemen's Land Census of the Year 1842 the following is listed
(abridged):
Road Party, Parish of Cleveland
Name of Householder: Government
Name of Employer of Servants: ditto
Name of Person in charge: George Bennett
Place of Residence: Township Cleveland
Person in Charge: George Bennett
Proprietor: Government
Dwelling built of: Stone and Wood
How many Persons generally reside in this Establishment besides yourself?:
73
How many of these persons are Free?: 5
Pity the people aren't named 8-)
regards,
Meryl Yost, Launceston, Tasmania
