Subject: [AUS-Tas] O'BRIEN/MORTIMER

A later list written by Reg Wright (in Raymond Nobbs book "Norfolk Island
and its First Settlement 1788-1814"
in the children section page 207):
Mortimer ????? OBrien NI
departed 3/9/08
Mortimer Agnes OBrien NI born 0/8/08 departed ..
Mortimer Catherine OBrien NI born 27/8/92 departed ..
Mortimer Elizabeth OBrien NI born 0/11/03 departed ..
Mortimer James OBrien NI born 0/2/05 departed ..
Mortimer Mary OBrien NI born 26/2/94 departed ..
Mortimer Mary Ann OBrien NI born 0/2/05 departed ..
Mortimer Susan OBrien PJ born 3/8/90 departed
..
Mortimer William OBrien NI born 24/2/02 departed ..
[One child more than on the embarkation list] some of the above could have
been baptisms

Norfolk Island Embarkation List to VDL 1807-1813 page 10:
Thomas OBrien 1 wife and 8 children departed NI on the City of Edinburgh
1808 (he had 18½ acres of land cleared on NI and 23½ acres uncleared. He was
under 1st class (being a soldier)

Even if a soldier married a convict the children took the name of their
convict mother until 1808 when they were allowded to take their husband's
name. There were exceptions as when Capt John Hunt Lucas fathered a child to
a convict woman, that child always went under the name Lucas. (and there
were a few others)

Hope this is of some help to OBrien descendants
