Tony

I see you are a WOODS descendent, so you may well know something I don't, so I beg your indulgence.

I have learnt that John WOOD and William WOOD, whom we have discussed at length over the last couple of days, probably had land at least initially around Sorell, ie from about 1820 or 1821 onwards. However, that John WOOD married Sarah NASH in 1819, and I understood she lived until 1879. And I'm not entirely convinced that William stayed in VDL (although he may have).

By the way, my geography is not all that good but Port Sorell has nothing to do with Sorell, being at opposite ends of the island. Port Sorell is located just east of Devonport on the Rubicon River.

I fear that you might be getting your wires crossed with the information below, which in itself may be correct, but may or may not not relate to your particular John WOODS. By 1825, there at least 7 John WOOD(S) that I know of in VDL (and at least 10 William WOOD(S) to boot) and so the correct identification becomes that much murkier than even in 1819. And you don't say when your John WOODS married Sarah NEWPORT, or indeed which one of the at least seven candidates he is. I know Tas link has it that a John WOODS married a Sarah NEWPORT in Sorell in 1827 but that is an entry marked with
"@", which to put it bluntly means it is merely a guess, both to the date and the place, and does not refer to a register entry, although of course one may exist (even under a different spelling !).

It would be helpful to know which John WOOD(S) and which William WOOD(S) you think each of the land grants you mention, pertains to. Would appreciate any clarification you can bring to this?

Regards

Garry
