Subject: [AUS-Tas] More WOODs - and maybe a Victualler!

While on the subject of WOODs, I have been researching some early George Town hoteliers and found that Augustus WOOD was the licencee of the Steam Packet Tavern in George Town from about 1839. The building which is thought to have later been a school and a store, is still in existence and is known locally as "Whitestones".

Augustus WOOD arrived in VDL on "England" in 1832

>From someone else's research I have the following:

Augustus WOOD (b. c1808) (Ticket of Leave) of George Town married Deborah WOOD nee VIDLER ?* (b 1800) Free Widow of George Town by banns with consent of Govt this day of May 1838 by WH Browne, Chaplin; Wit: John Hughes of GTn, William Jones, Lton.

On further investigation, I have found that the widow Deborah WOOD was formerly Deborah PREECE - not VIDLER.

Deborah PREECE m. 15.1.1835 William WOOD, Lton Dist

a William WOOD (39) died 30.5.1837, Lton Dist.

Deborah WOOD (54) d. 1854 Lton Dist ( = b. c1800 )

Augustus WOOD (48) d. 1856 Lton Dist ; burial C/E GTn (Innkeeper of G Tn)

Sooo - where did the name VIDLER come from? Perhaps Deborah's first husband, William WOOD and later she herself ran the Steam Packet Inn (or some other establishment) and was actually a "Victualler" (pronounced "Vittler" remember !) when she was married to Augustus.

Are William and Augustus WOOD related?

I'd be interested to hear if anyone has a connection or any more information on any of these people.

Lorraine Wootton.
