Hooray!!!! Liz has given me the marriage and date (here) of Thomas Cookson
Simpson and Catherine Taylor (nee Riseley). Wonderful!! I borrowed
Knopwood's diary twice during the time I was looking for that too!
Thank you so much. One thing off the list!
Catherine died after producing a son and daughter and TC Simpson married
Margaret Abbott, daughter of Edward Abbott Esq.
Then TC died aged only 42 after going in too deep financially (possible
suicide).
The eldest son drowned in the Tamar aged 21.His father's will endowed the
property Newham Park, on the Macquarie, to him on his 22nd. birthday!!!!
Then the estate was acquired by my gr gr grandfather Robert Thirkell who
also came on the Caroline but is not listed, being brought from Durham by TC
Simpson as his overseer.
Then the younger son of Catherine Taylor/Simpson (nee Riseley) George Owen
Taylor, married his stepmother and although he and his brother were endowed
parcels of the estate (1000 acres each) they mortgaged it to Robert Thirkell
who acquired it.
All very strange! Quite a story and bits left out, like how Robert Thirkell,
having been convicted here for stealing a cowhide, then managed to become a
"gentleman" and large landowner in such a short time.
And the sad demise of TC Simpson and Catherine Taylor (nee Riseley).
I feel that the Mrs. Riseley on the Caroline was perhaps the mother rather
than the sister but there seems no proof either way.
