Dear Lyn,

Yes there was whaling carried out at Recherche Bay. Lady Jane Franklin mentioned the bones of whales on the beach and the smell when she was there in the 1840's. Let me know if you want anything else and I will look up my whaling info. I think whaling was in progress as early as the 1830's. It was well and truly populated in 1875.

Hi List,

Would anyone know if there was a whaling station, or fishing village
at Recherche in 1875, my GGMother died there in that year, death
cert. shows she was living with a fisherman as his wife, there are
only 4 death registrations for the quarter, she and her prem.baby
being 2 of them, informant in all the cases being the Special
Constable at Recherche. I was wondering if it was just a tiny
isolated outpost, or if at the time it had a larger population due
to a fishing or whaling fleet? I have found online info regarding
the old cemeteries etc, but not about a settlement that may have been
there.
TIA

Lyn
