Thanks Lesley for the dates of the 1820 muster lists for the Derwent, 9th
to 28th October and Port Dalrymple between 10th and15th November.
Thanks too to Liz for the amazing amount of detail on my ancestor Ann Grant
who was sent to Port Dalrymple in 1824 with John Cothay convict per ship
Lady Castlereagh and convict John Isherwood per ship Glory.
The 1827/8 childrens census records Ann and John Smith with sons John 4 and
James 6 mths as settlers on the East Tamar River. Protestant character
indifferent.
In April 1831 Ann was charged with fraud which was dismissed However a
report in The Independent stated she sold 47 tons of wattle bark to Mr Davis
then sold it again to another party! This was the final entry on her con
record. Liz has now forwarded more references to Ann's criminal record under
the name of Ann Griffiths. Hadn't thought of that as I believed all her
crimes would be on the one record. so this is very interesting!
John Smith , states in his application for land 2//4/1825 at Georgetown that
immediately on his arrival he
was appointed coxswain of the Commandant's boat at Port Dalrymple, which
position he held until the commencement of 1824 having served under and
obtained the approbatory testimony ofMajor Stewart and Lt Col Cimitiere
late Commandants
He was located 30 acres on the eastern side of the Tamar at Swan Bay.
grateful thanks from Shirley in an extremely wet East Gippsland
