This was an organisation started by Caroline Chisholm to help fund poor
families and single women to migrate to the Australian colonies. I don't have
the details with me at the moment but you might like to check Chisholm's entry
in the ADB. My interest is a woman who came out on the very last ship the
society organised in 1858 - by which time Chishom was no longer involved.
Chisholm was particularly concerned that single women weren't harassed and felt
safe during the voyage - and in the early days of the society (1840s)would
organise them to be sponsored by a family travelling. There are some images I
think in the London Illustrated News - and a cartoon in Punch,
