Hello Maureen

I'm not convinced that it is the Probation System per se that prevented
later arrived convicts to 'succeed' (however you define it!). I think there
was a shift in culture and attitude, plus it was more difficult to free
settlers to get land as well - grants certainly stopped c1830s (please,
anyone, correct me if I'm wrong on this). The whole system view of
convictism changed over time, with the Probation System as a result of this
change, not the other way round.

I'd be interested in hearing anyone else's thoughts ...

Cheers
Trudy

Hi List,

Thank you all for your responses for "well to do" convicts. It has been
interesting to note that most seem to be early convicts before the Probation
System which enabled them to obtain land grants.

In my mind this shows the Tasmanian Probation System created class
distinction, by this I mean early assigned convicts were given better
opportunities to succeed.

Well know land owners that come to mind are the BURBURY, O'CONNOR, DUNBABBIN
& JONES (Britton Jones).

My convict John RADFORD arrived in 1818, he owned and ran several Inn's on
the East Coast. He owned the property "Muirlands" at Little Swanport which
was also an Inn. He married into the well know BUXTON family from Mayfield
Estate and produced a large family. When he died in 1883 his obituary
states "He began the world with nothing, and left with 9000 acres of land".

None of my later convicts can match anything like John Radford.

Regards
