Dear Listers,

The new land regulations arrived in VDL in June 1831. George Frankland,
Surveyor-General, described the regulations as "like a sudden discharge of
grape-shot from a masked battery on a body of marauders who are plundering
the baggage in the rear." The system of land grants was replaced by sales
of Crown Land at a minimum price of five shillings per acre.

By this time of course, much of the remaining Crown Land was of an inferior
quality.

The new system of land sales was designed to fund the Government immigration
program discussed in recent postings to this list.

<snip>

I think there was a shift in culture and attitude, plus it was more
difficult to free settlers to get land as well - grants certainly stopped
c1830s (please, anyone, correct me if I'm wrong on this).
