My ggggfather William ALLENSBY per Lady Harewood 1829 was convicted of stealing a watch and sentenced to 14 yrs transportation - on looking at his record trial at the Old Bailey it looks as if he could have been 'set up'.
He'd been married with 2 chn in London and as he'd been a Bow Street officer, he was soon employed as a Constable and in the Field Police - until he accepted a bribe - but later was again appointed as a police officer!
He married another convict Mary Anne WALKER, a widow before convicted and they had one child who married another convict!
William was appointed 'Flagellator' on a few occasions and gained his freedom in 1840. In 1850 a notice in the Examiner announced that he had opened a Butcher's Shop in Longford.
When he died in 1860, his death notice was printed in the Mercury. He was at that time Overseer of "Panshanger" - no doubt his attributes for the Flagellator's position also fitted him for this one!
Not exactly 'well to do' but he certainly moved up in the world.
Lorraine.
