Hi Doug and list
I suspect you might be looking in the wrong state......at the wrong
Macquarie River......this is why.....
My convict ancestor Peter REILLY ("Countess of Harcourt" 1827) was disposed
of to J Walkers farm at Bathurst where the Maquarie River flows, so I would
say that's what your looking for.
Peter petitioned for his wife and family to be brought out at the expense of
the Govt. his application was dated at Wallerawang 3/10/1831. It's
interesting to note that the number on his ticket of leave is 36/76 (1836)
and his family finally arrived in 1838. They didn't rush these things, did
they.....
Some facts available at Archives included as follows:
"I certify that the above man now in Mr Walker's service since August 1827,
he being hardworking, industrious man" signed by Andrew Brown, Manager for
James WALKER esq.
From the remote situation he has been employed as a SHEPHERD, he is unknown
to Clergyman or Magistrate but his master James WALKER esq (now absent from
colony) who was also magistrate has left him written testimonial of good
character. signed Thomas WALKER
I believe James WALKER was primarily a sheepfarmer, though he would have had
people to tend to the horses and cattle as well as a variety of crops, and
of course a household staff, so depending on what your guy usually did for a
living, it could have been any one of the above.
The request for family to join Peter in Australia was taken from the
COLONIAL LETTERS BOOK at ARCHIVES OFFICE NSW. As this information has been
passed on to me by other researchers, I can only assume that the
testimonials were included with the request.
I hope this sheds a little light
Regards
Jackie in Brisbane

|
| Probably an "agricultural labourer" or farm worker of some sort, working
on
| the property of J. Walker which had frontage on the Macquarie River.
|
| The Macquarie River runs from Tooms Lake, out in the backblocks to the
| south-east of Ross, and winds past Ross, Campbell Town and Cressy, before
| it connects with the Lake River near Longford.
|
| Land records would probably show whereabouts in the Macquarie River valley
| J. Walker's land was.
